ChatGPT for Social Media: My Agency-Approved Process for Creating Captions for Any Brand

Learn how to use ChatGPT to create social media captions for yourself or your clients with my agency-approved method.

Social media is a fickle beast. On one hand, you need to post frequently to stay top of mind. But generic, robotic content won’t cut it. Your audience expects value, personality, and that special something that makes your brand, well…your brand!

So how do you keep pumping out posts that sound like you when you’re stretched thin on time? Enter: ChatGPT.

Now I know some of you may be skeptical of using AI to create branded content. And I don’t blame you! In the past, the results sounded about as authentic as a Nigerian prince promising you riches.

But ChatGPT — specifically GPT-4 — has been a game changer. With the right approach, you can create social captions that make your followers say “Yas, queen!” (or king/monarch/etc. – no judgments here!).

In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly how I use ChatGPT to brainstorm and write social media captions that capture my client’s brand voice. You can follow the same process to develop captivating content your audience loves.

Step 1: Give ChatGPT the Download on Your Brand

The key is providing ChatGPT with a detailed overview of your brand right off the bat. This is what I like to call a “pre-prompt.”

It should include things like:

  • Your brand mission and values
  • Tone of voice guidelines
  • Ideal customer demographics
  • Sample social captions that represent your voice

Basically, give ChatGPT all the intel needed to mimic your style. Without this context, you’ll get generic results. Garbage in, garbage out.

One of the best ways I’ve found to do this is to create what we call a Pre-Prompt. This is something we do for every single client in my content agency, and it drastically reduces the amount of time we need to spend on this first step. If you don’t have a pre-prompt, simply copy/paste your “About” page or other website content. It’s better than nothing!

Step 2: Define Your Target Audience

Next, give ChatGPT specifics on who your brand serves. At a minimum, share your target demographics like:

  • Age range
  • Gender
  • Location
  • Income level
  • Interests/values

But even better is developing detailed buyer personas. Share your persona names, bios, goals, and motivations. This helps ChatGPT appeal directly to your ideal audience.

If you don’t have official personas, no worries! Ask ChatGPT to generate a few based on your brand description. Then refine them until they’re an accurate representation.

Step 3: Set Expectations

Now comes the fun part – actually brainstorming topics and writing captions.

But first, let ChatGPT know what you’re about to do:

“Today we’re going to create social media post captions for [Your Brand]. First, I’ll tell you about my brand. Then I’ll ask you to brainstorm topics and write sample posts. Ready?”

Be clear you want ChatGPT to provide inspiration, not final content. Its captions will likely need editing to represent your true brand voice. Sorry, there’s simply no replacement for that final human touch. Not yet, at least.

And that leads me to…

Step 4: Brainstorm Topic Ideas

Start broad by asking ChatGPT for a list of, say, 25 potential social post topics.

For example:

“Please suggest 25 topics for social media posts that would appeal to [Your Target Audience].”

Once you have a solid list, ask ChatGPT to write post captions for the ideas that best align with your brand.

You can also pick a specific buyer persona and have it “get into character” to inspire the right tone.

Step 5: Refine, Refine, Refine

Now the real magic happens.

Review ChatGPT’s initial post captions. Give feedback on which ones hit or miss the mark.

You can say things like:

“This caption sounds too formal. Can you make it more casual and friendly?”

“Great post! Could you add some emojis to give it more personality?”

Keep iterating and providing examples of your brand’s voice until ChatGPT dial dial dial dial dials it in.

Some other tips:

  • Have ChatGPT expand captions from one-liners to multiple sentences
  • Adjust tone of voice or add/remove humor
  • Use slogans, branded hashtags, etc.
  • Fix inaccuracies about your brand!

It may take a few rounds, but ChatGPT will learn to replicate your unique social media style.

Troubleshooting Tips

It’s important to remember that ChatGPT has a limited memory. If you find that the output is missing the mark, it may just need a refresher on the task at hand.

If ChatGPT starts going off the rails:

  • Refresh its memory on your brand by re-sharing your pre-prompt
  • Ask it what it needs to get back on track
  • Give it examples of the last output that was on point
  • Start a new chat and re-establish your brand guidelines — it will be quicker this time since you can just paste over your prompts and the brand summary from your current chat!

The key is being hands-on and continually course-correcting. But the more you work with ChatGPT, the better it will become at capturing your brand essence.
